How Do I Prevent Baldness

Does steam cause baldness?

I work in a kitchen and the dish washing machine always lets out steam. Also most of the other guys working there have been going blad. Even the younger guys 20-23 are going through stages of balding. If this is true, is it possible to protect my hair with a shower cap? Or if I shave my head bald, will that prevent steam from damaging my hair? Any other suggestions on how to protect my hair from steam are welcomed.
