Hair Loss Vitamins For Women

Are prenatal pills ok to take if you are not or are not planning to get pregnant just yet?
Im 19 and not quite ready to get pregnant for another 2 years or so. I love what prenatal pills can do for a woman. I used to take a multi-vitamin everyday but im curious to know if its ok to take prenatal pills if im not pregnant or if im not going to get pregnant yet. I would like to take them for the vitamins, for my brittle nails, recent hair loss and for my skin. I also would like to know if i can get them from the pharmacy even tho im not pregnant. Thank you!
Fekrije,
You’re not on a really restrictive diet, are you?
Prenatal vitamins as a general rule are safe even for women not yet pregnant, but may I suggest something else?
While you may be able to withstand the expense–they’re not that expensive–the caution that I would give on this is that normally vitamin supplements don’t do anything for us.
Now, vitamins are important, that is true, but unless we are malnourished, the supplements give us nothing that we don’t already have.
Which brings up the question, “Why might you have brittle nails?”
The answer to this may or may not be “Because I don’t take the right vitamins.”
If you’re experiencing brittle nails, hair loss, and a skin problem, I would first say that you should look at your diet. All these things can be–I’d bet are–related, and they exist because there’s something besides vitamins that you’re not doing.
Normally, it isn’t the vitamins that help your nails. Vitamins really are enzymes, anyway, that speed up certain processes in your body, or help them to take place at lower (body) temperatures
(Except for Vitamin D, which is a hormone precursor). but the processes usually do not involve nails and hair unless there’s something really missing on our plate.
Minerals, yes–iron and calcium, for instance–but you’d be better off getting those from food instead of from vitamins. If you’re not getting enough iron or calcium, there’s something that you’re not eating that you really should be.
What are you eating? What are you not eating? How hydrated do you keep yourself? How much do you eat?
How often do you wash and dry your hands, and do you use a good moisturizer when you do?
How often do you use nail polish remover? Some of those have in them industrial-strecgth acetone, and some are identical to paint stripper.
If you start taking prenatal vitamins, you might mask the effects of something else going on in your lifestyle or diet, something that will harm you, vitamins or no.
So before you settle for prenatals, check out what might be missing from your diet.
I hope you have gorgeous nails, but even more, I’d like you to be healthy, and I’d bet that great nails will follow good health.
