Hair Loss Vitamin Deficiency

Long-haired calico losing hair?

Our 13yo cat is losing hair along the tail end of her back. She has always been healthy except for some UTI problems a few years ago. Any ideas? Vitamin deficiency? Weather? We have had a very warm spring here in NC, could that be the cause of sudden hair loss/shedding? I’ve heard that diet or even a change in seasons can cause this type of hair loss but I don’t want to take any chances…

When cats start to get older, they do tend to lose fur along the ridge of their back toward the rear. Let’s face it, 13 is not a youngster. She may simply be showing her age.

Seasons can cause certain changes, but not normally hair loss in just that area. Vitamin deficiencies usually produce a more uniform hair loss.

Have you noticed any weight loss? Any changes in her “hawes” (3rd eyelid)? Are her gums a healthy color? Try “snapping” her skin on the top side of her neck. Pull up the loose skin andrelease it. If it IMMEDIATELY returns to normal, np…if it is slow in returning back to body…that shows signs of dehydration. Dehydration can be a sin of many illnesses yet to be seen by a human.

She could also be developing allergies. Possibly have a skin irritation in that area as well.

If I were worried, I would take her to your vet. I am a subscriber to better safe than sorry.
