Hair Loss Eyelashes

Total hair loss? What the disease called?
I have a friend (female) who has lost all of her hair – eyelashes, eyebrows, head hair, leg hair – you name it, it’s gone. She told me the name of the disease (?) that caused it, but I can’t remember. Anyone know?
The disease you describe sounds like it may be alopecia universalis. This is the most severe form of a variable disease process called alopecia areata.
Importantly, alopecia areata has an etiological basis that is typically unresponsive to those therapies which have been designed to treat Androgenetic Alopecia AKA common pattern hair loss.
Alopecia areata — in all its forms — is thought to result from a dysfunction in the body’s auto-immune response mounting an attack on its hair follicles. In affected individuals, the immune system perceives its own hair follicles as foreign bodies and destroys them. The underlying triggers are still being worked out.
At present, treatment options are limited to steroid administration such as cortisone and/or dexamethasone. Response is highly individual but in persons afflicted with alopecia totalis or alopecia universalis, hair loss may be permanent.
I trust this helps answer your question but if further clarification is necessary please advise. In any event, I wish your friend the best of luck.
