What does Dog’s hair thinning mean?
My dog is seven years old, she’s a Maltese Pomeranian female. Today my mom was giving her a bath and noticed her hair had gotten really thin and you could see through to her skin. So chunks of her hair are missing, we’ve had her since she was about 8 months old and have been feeding her the same food her whole life with us. In october my mom had a doggy sweater she constantly put on the dog and was wondering if that could have caused her hair loss. Does anyone know what causes dog hair loss, what could it be? Could she possibly have a disease? And is there anything that could treat it?
Loosing hair can mean many things. It could be due to the fact that she is not processing her diet very well anymore and needs the added support of a senior diet.
It could be related to a thyroid issue…is she overweight?? Thirsty?? Panting often?? These are signs of thyroid issue in dogs along with thinning hair.
It could be a skin infection but you would probably see other signs of that such as odor and/or itching.
It could be an allergy to something. If it is an allergy it will respond to benadryl. You could try giving 1-2 mg of Benadryl per pound. If you have had her in the same environment (you haven’t moved have you?) and on the same food her qhole life I would be less inclined to think of allergies causing it.
It is unlikely that the dog sweater caused the hair to fall out.
