Vitamin D and sunburn through glass?
I asked this question in the category ‘Health’ but have got no answers after 3 days. Maybe someone here knows the answers.
I believe both vitamin D synthesis and sunburn are caused by the ultra-violet portion of sunlight falling on our skin. What about sunlight passing through glass, e.g. a window of my home or car? Does the ultra-violet pass through glass or is it absorbed? Or it might of course be partially absorbed, or it might depend on what type of glass it is, etc. Also, I realise that ‘ultra-violet’ is actually a range of wavelengths, so the answer may not be straightforward.
I am nearly bald. I take it that the skin on the top of my head (where there used to be hair) can synthesise vitamin D, just like my other skin? If so, then baldness is not entirely a bad thing!
You are correct that both vitamin D synthesis and sunburn are caused by UV radiation hitting the skin.
The absorbance or blocking of UV radiation by glass is dependent upon the type of glass. “Normal” glass will not significantly block UV radiation. I don’t think any glass will significantly block or interfere with UV radiation unless it is specifically designed to do so, since certain compounds are needed to selectively block it. If a type of glass doesn’t say that it blocks UV radiation, it is probably safe to assume that it does not.
The skin on the top of your head will produce vitamin D in the same way as any other skin.
