How to Prevent Baldness When Hair Loss Strikes

Maybe you first noticed it when you saw the clogged shower drain or the pillow that resembled a cat.  Maybe you looked at your hairbrush and realized that the amount of hair in it is nowhere near normal.  Hair loss or alopecia in women is a devastating and tragic experience.  While it is easy to lose hope, there are ways to prevent baldness or at least slow down the progression of all types of hair thinning.

The first course of action should be to find out exactly what is causing the hair loss in the first place.  A trip to the doctor should resolve this issue.  In many cases, you will be on your way to preventing baldness and even stopping the hair loss just by speaking to a physician.  Hair loss can be temporary as in the case of postpartum hair loss or stress related alopecia.

Temporary hair loss is called telogen effluvium and will usually present with diffuse thinning.  While this condition seems harmless, it can go on for as long as the cause remains.  Therefore, to prevent baldness, you should find out exactly what is bringing about the condition.  It can be related to many things such as certain medications, stress, anxiety, trauma, nutrient deficiency or crash dieting.  Once these causes are removed, the hair loss should stop.

But what if it isn’t so simple?  It is easy to prevent baldness if the condition was only temporary, but with androgenetic alopecia the journey is a longer and harder one.  Male hormones present in a woman’s body can trigger thinning of hair as can genetics passed from the mother’s or father’s side.  These are things that usually remain out of a woman’s immediate control.  Androgenetic alopecia can be very stressful, but there are still ways to prevent baldness with this condition.

Since androgenetic alopecia can be caused by hormones, the good news is it can be fought off with hormones as well.  You can prevent baldness and even stop hair loss by talking to your doctor about hormone replacement therapy, birth control pills or antiandrogen solutions.  Remember that hair loss is a major part of menopause and over 20 million American women experience this very thing.

Apart from the help that medicine can provide, there are also daily ways to change the way you treat your hair that can make a difference.  Scalp massages with natural oils can remove dead hairs in order to make room for new ones to grow.  Scalp massages should be performed after every shampoo to prevent from the drying effects of chemicals in shampoos.  Also, it is suggested to avoid absolutely any unnatural means of modifying your hair including colouring, perming, highlighting, ironing or blow-drying excessively.  You should try to keep your hair as free and natural as possible if you want to prevent balding – this includes leaving out tight ponytails.

If you have recently overcome alopecia, there are ways to prevent baldness in the future.  Keeping a diet rich with proteins and omega 3 oils as well as enough exposure to Vitamin D will help keep hair strong.  Also, regular checkups at the doctor’s are a good idea as hair loss can take some time to show itself visually and can be a sign of bigger problems.

If it seems like there is no hope, there is always a ray of sunshine at the end of the road.  Even for the most severe cases, hair transplant surgery is available.  No woman should have to live without a beautiful head of hair and, by taking the right steps, you too can prevent baldness.
