Hair loss at 17?!?

I had long hair for the last five years or more and have never noticed a problem with that. During the last month or so I realized that much of my hair has been falling. At first I thought it was just because it is summer and tended to lose more hair during the summer. Then a friend of mine went to my picture and when he showed me, I realized that there were large gaps in my hair over my head. What about that? I have not changed shampoos or do things differently. I have no baldness in my family at all. My father and grandfather (who is in his 50 and 80), both still have a head full of hair without any signs of baldness. It's really starting to scare me. Is there an explanation for this. Is this temporary? This is what I can do to stop it? The loss my hair is probably one of my biggest fears. I'd rather spend anything before baldness. Can someone please throw (no pun intended) some light on this?
