Male patterned baldness is caused by a recessive allele on the X chromosome. An autosomal disorder called Sickle cell anemia is caused by crescent-shaped red blood cells while normal blood cells are round. If a person is heterozygous for the disorder, they have some normal red blood cells and some crescent-shaped red blood cells. Suppose a bald male with sickle cell anemia has children with a female that is homozygous normal for both disorders. What are the percentages of the expected phenotypes of their children?

First let’s assign letters to the different genes. We’ll call sickle cell S (for normal, WT blood allele) and s (for sickle cell gene). We’ll call the baldness gene B (for non-baldness) and b (for male pattern baldness). Given that information, the parents would be ssbY (the man is bY because he carried the baldness gene on his x-chromosome, but doesn’t have a second x-chromosome, he has a y, so he is called hemizygous for b – remember that word, it’ll impress your teacher). The mother is homozygous normal (or wild type) for both, so she is SSBB. If you cross these individuals you’ll get:

So the phenotypes are:
SsBb (a girl who is wild type [normal] for both states, but she does make *some* sickle-shaped blood cells) but is not bald, and

BTW – The crescent shaped blood cell allele is recessive, though not completely since there is some phenotype from a heterozygous genotype
